Unboxing the RF-1400’s successor with Snell M2025
Summary: Shoei’s RF-1500 is the successor to the RF-1400, a sport / sport-touring full-face with six shell sizes, Snell M2025 and DOT certification, and the familiar CWR-F2 shield family. Shoei claims 90% more upper airflow, 40% more lower airflow and 13% less lift than the RF-1400. It retails for about $700 and is available now at Speed Addicts.
Well folks, today’s a good day. Shoei just handed us the RF-1500, the successor to the long-running RF-1400, and we tore into a gloss-black lid on camera. Same RF DNA, a cleaner, racier silhouette, and a ventilation story Shoei is very proud of. Here’s what showed up in the box, what Shoei claims versus the RF-1400, and how the shield story still works.
RF-1500 vs. RF-1400: Airflow and Aero
Shoei says the RF-1500’s upper intakes flow 90% more air than the RF-1400, the lower chin vents add 40% more airflow, and the shell cuts lift by 13%. Those numbers come from Shoei’s own wind tunnel in Japan, where the company develops and tunes its lids. The shape is a conservative step, not a radical redesign, but it’s more swoopy and racy than the last RF, with a clean wing out back. If you’re shopping the RF family, we already covered the street-oriented Shoei RF-SR 2 Review and our earlier Shoei RF-SR2 Preview.
Six Shell Sizes and Micro-Fit
Fit is where Shoei usually wins, and the RF-1500 leans into that. It uses six shell sizes across XS to 3XL. Extra-small and small share a shell; medium, large, XL, 2XL and 3XL each get their own. That keeps the profile tight instead of padding a big shell down. You can still tune cheek pads and the crown liner thicker or thinner, and the liner includes pull-out micro-adjustment foam so you can dial a little more room without buying a whole new pad set. Snell M2025 and DOT, No ECE
This U.S.-bound RF-1500 is Snell M2025 and DOT certified. There’s no ECE homologation on this one. If you want the alphabet soup decoded, read our helmet safety ratings explainer. And if your current lid is getting long in the tooth, don’t sleep on When Should You Replace Your Motorcycle Helmet?
CWR-F2 Shield, Pinlock EVO and Transitions
Good news for RF-1400 owners: the CWR-F2 / CWR-F2R shield system carries over, so you’re not starting over on tinted spares. The RF-1500 ships with a Pinlock EVO insert, plus the usual care kit: chin curtain, breath guard, spare Pinlock tabs and Shoei’s silicone hinge lubricant. Shoei still offers iridium, dark and light smoke shields, and our favorite remains the Transitions photochromic shield that darkens in bright light and stays clear at night. That Transitions piece runs a little over $200. In the video we also walk through removing the center-lock shield and installing the Pinlock EVO the right way, gasket side down.
Price and Availability
We’re calling the RF-1500 about $700, and Speed Addicts currently lists solid colors, including gloss black, at $699.99. It’s available now from Speed Addicts. Shoei’s U.S. site still has the RF-1400 front and center, with the RF-1500 product URL redirecting to the all-products page as of this writing, so dealer inventory is the practical buy path today. An in-depth road review is coming on Moto-1.
