For nearly a quarter of a century, the Suzuki DR-Z400SM was the cockroach of the motorcycle world—and we mean that with the utmost affection. It survived emissions crackdowns, changing tastes, and the passage of time without a single major update. But the clock finally struck midnight on the old carbureted single.
Enter the totally redesigned 2025 Suzuki DR-Z4SM. To see if this new-school street-legal hooligan bike lives up to the legend, we brought it out to the tight, technical Winchester K1 Speed Go Kart Track. Because let’s be honest: while it is built to survive the morning commute, this motorcycle was born to do silly things on closed courses.
Ergonomics: A Tighter, More Aggressive Cockpit
The moment you swing a leg over the DR-Z4SM, it feels instantly familiar yet distinctly more focused than its sibling, the 2025 Suzuki DR-Z4S Dual Sport.
While it retains that high, commanding dirt-bike-like seating position, Suzuki tweaked the triangle for the pavement. The flat handlebar sits slightly forward, and the footpegs are moved more rearward compared to the dual-sport model. For a six-foot-tall, 180-pound rider, the ergonomics strike a beautiful balance. The seat has surprising substance to it—it won’t compete with a dedicated street bike for cross-country touring, but it won’t punish you on your weekend canyon runs either.
Powertrain: Fuel Injection and Smooth Single-Cylinder Power
The big news is under the tank. The ancient carburetor is gone, replaced by modern electronic fuel injection.
Purists might whine that it keeps a 5-speed transmission, but the ratios are wide, and Suzuki gave the SM taller rear gearing (two teeth less on the rear sprocket) than the dirt version. This gives it a comfortable top speed north of 90 mph.
- The Power Output: The liquid-cooled, 398cc single pushes out right around 35 horsepower and 20 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheel.
- The Delivery: It is remarkably smooth. Suzuki successfully engineered out the bone-rattling vibrations that plagued the old bike, making it one of the most civilized singles on the market today.
Tech and Handling: “Backing It In” with Modern Electronics
Unlike its analog predecessor, the 2025 model gets the full Suzuki Intelligent Ride System (S.I.R.S.). You get the Suzuki Drive Mode Select (SDMS) with three on-the-fly throttle maps (A, B, and C), with “A” offering the crispest throttle response.
It also features a four-way adjustable traction control system, including a unique “G” (Gravel) mode. But let’s face it: on a supermoto, you don’t need no stinking traction control. We quickly switched it off.
To truly have fun on a tight kart track, you need to “back it in”—slide the rear tire under heavy braking into the apex. The dual hydraulic disc brakes offer great modulation, and a quick hold of the dash button completely disables the rear ABS (the front ABS remains permanently on). Combined with the new cable-actuated slipper clutch, you can drop gears aggressively without worrying about the rear wheel hopping or skipping out of control.
The chassis is highly robust, dropping the old backbone design for a twin-spar steel frame that looks heavily inspired by classic motocross geometry. Tipping the scales at 340 lbs wet (7 lbs heavier than the dual-sport version due to the street gear), it flicks side-to-side with effortless agility. The 43mm KYB front fork is a bit springy out of the box, but dialing in the compression and rebound damping sharpens up the front end beautifully.
The Verdict: A Masterclass in Pure Fun
The 2025 Suzuki DR-Z4SM isn’t trying to be a hard-edged, high-maintenance European race bike. Instead, it bridges the gap between daily commuter practicality and pure, unadulterated weekend hooliganism. With a 3,500-mile oil change interval and bulletproof Japanese reliability, it’s a bike you can ride to the track, thrash all day, and ride home without breaking a sweat.
If you are looking for a nimble corner-carver that makes every parking lot, go-kart track, and canyon road feel like your personal playground, the king of supermotos has officially retained its crown.
