The Smart Helmet That Brings the Bass
A $1,299 carbon smart lid with killer audio and ANC
The Short Answer: The Cardo Beyond GTS is a $1,299 carbon-fiber, DOT and ECE 22.06-certified sport-touring helmet with Cardo’s mesh intercom, big 53 mm speakers, active noise cancellation and a brake light built in. It’s one of the best-sounding helmets Adam Waheed has tested and earned 4.5 of 5 Speed Addicts bolts, losing half a point for temple pressure.
For years, Cardo has made the gadgets we stick on the side of our helmets. Now it wants to make the whole helmet. After the off-road Cardo Venture, the Beyond GTS is the brand’s street-going answer for riders who are tired of a comm unit hanging off the side of their lid like a barnacle. Adam Waheed spent the better part of a six-hour day in one aboard a Yamaha Tracer 9 GT for this SpeedAddictsTV road test. One note up front: the helmet he tested is a pre-production unit, and Cardo says it will use the Speed Addicts crew’s feedback to refine the final product.

What Is the Cardo Beyond GTS?
The Beyond GTS is a full-face, fixed-chin-bar sport-touring helmet with Cardo’s communication system built right into the shell. The controls sit in the shell itself, so nothing pokes out. The shell is a carbon-fiber composite reinforced with aramid over a five-section, multi-density EPS liner, and the helmet is both DOT and ECE 22.06 certified. Styling came from Kiska, the Austrian design house, and Waheed points out that some of its lines look a bit like a Schuberth. Waheed sees it going up against the Schuberth C5 (a modular) and the Shoei GT-Air 3.
The helmet comes in one color. Cardo offers it in sizes XS through XXL with four shell sizes, and it’s built for an intermediate-oval head shape. Waheed notes it’s made in China but says the craftsmanship will surprise you. The battery pops out cleanly, the vents and visor work smoothly, and the whole thing feels like a $1,300 helmet should.
Fit, Weight and Comfort
Waheed’s size medium weighs right around 4 pounds, and Cardo’s official figure is 1,870 grams (about 4.1 pounds) for a DOT size medium with all the electronics. That’s not the lightest helmet he’s tested, and not the heaviest either. Keep in mind that most helmet weights are measured without a Bluetooth unit attached, and the Beyond doesn’t come any other way.
The interior is plush and soft against the skin, from the cheek pads to the crown liner. Fit is true to size, maybe a touch snug, though not enough to make him size up. The one sore spot, literally, was pressure at the temples after a long day. Waheed’s fix would be a thinner top crown liner, and Cardo plans to sell different-thickness cheek pads and crown liners at Speed Addicts shortly after launch. A conventional double D-ring closure (titanium, according to Cardo) keeps things simple.
Audio: Cardo Finally Brings the Bass
The audio is the headline feature, and it lives up to the hype. The oversized speakers are recessed so well that Waheed couldn’t feel them at all, with no pressure points around the ears. Spin the volume dial and things “get loud in a good way fast.”
The big difference from Cardo’s earlier headsets is bass. “We’ve never really used a Cardo Systems headset that had actual bass,” Waheed says. It isn’t a 10-inch subwoofer in a pickup truck, but it’s there. Cardo designed the speaker enclosure along with the drivers, so the highs are crisp and the lows actually hit. Waheed calls it “easily one of the best sounding motorcycle helmets we’ve ever tested.” Audiophiles, you can stop squinting at spec sheets now.
Mesh Intercom, Bluetooth and Voice Commands
A hidden microphone sits in the chin bar, where you can’t see it and your lips can’t touch it. Riding with buddies on other brands? Connect through Bluetooth intercom. Riding with Cardo users? Jump on Dynamic Mesh Communication, which Cardo says handles up to 31 riders and a range of up to 2 km (1.2 miles). A dedicated button on the right side drops you in and out of the group chat, which Waheed loves for those moments when you’ve heard enough of your buddies’ BS and just want your music back.
Pairing with iOS or Android phones is easy, Siri works, and voice commands let you mute and unmute the mic or run other functions without touching anything. On the left side is the volume control, which Waheed thinks is too small and short on tactile feel. There’s also a customizable button up top that you can assign as a hotkey for whatever feature you use most.
Active Noise Cancellation: Does It Work?
A button on the back of the helmet turns on the ANC, which Cardo bills as the first working active noise cancellation built for motorcyclists. Waheed’s real-world take: with no music playing, it’s about 5 to 10 percent quieter inside the helmet. With music on, the difference grows to around 10 to 15 percent, and the tunes come through clearer. He wore earplugs the whole time, as he always does, and could still hear the speakers and phone calls clearly.
He tested it on a smooth, fairly quiet Tracer 9 GT triple, and he’s heard the ANC makes an even bigger difference on V-twins. Overall the helmet is quiet. It isn’t the quietest he’s tested, but the air behind the visor is especially calm, without the turbulence some helmets let in.
Visor, Sun Shade and Ventilation
The drop-down internal sun visor is huge, deep and wide, and you can work its thumb lever easily with gloves on. It’s big enough that most riders won’t need a dark-smoke face shield, though Cardo offers one as an accessory for anyone riding through Arizona at noon in August. The clear shield comes Pinlock 200-ready, and the Pinlock 200 anti-fog lens comes in the box. If you ride in cold, damp or humid weather, you’ll want it.
Ventilation is a split decision. The chin vent is easy to use with gloves and flows plenty of air. The top vent is just as easy to operate but doesn’t flow as much, and opening it makes the helmet a bit louder. Waheed calls that the helmet’s main area for improvement.
Brake Light, Proximity Sensor and Smart Tech
An integrated brake light at the back of the helmet uses an onboard IMU to light up whenever you slow down. If you’re riding in a group and don’t want to light up your buddies, you can turn it off in the Cardo Connect app. An ambient light sensor on the right side dims the light at night so you don’t blind the drivers behind you.
Cardo also added a proximity sensor. Take your head out of the helmet and it shuts off. Put it back on and it powers up. That’s a step beyond the Packtalk Pro, which turns off when you set the helmet down. Cardo also lists crash detection and a helmet health monitoring system, which tracks impacts over time and tells you when the helmet should be inspected or replaced.
Removable Battery
Everything runs on a 2,000 mAh battery that pops out of the back of the helmet. Waheed says it charges over USB-C in a couple of hours (Cardo’s U.S. site also lists wireless charging), and Cardo claims up to 13 hours of full-feature use. Running low on a multi-day trip? Swap in a spare. Want to leave the helmet on the bike while the battery charges inside? Just pop it out.
Price and Value: Is $1,299 Worth It?
Yes, $1,299 is a lot of money for a helmet. But Waheed does the math: buy a premium Japanese touring lid for around $900, add roughly $450 for a Cardo Packtalk Pro, and you’re at or past the Beyond’s price. The difference is integration. The speakers, wiring and controls are tucked inside the shell, so nothing hangs off the side and you aren’t fiddling with an aftermarket install. “It’s like it doesn’t even have it,” he says.
Speed Addicts Score: 4.5 Lightning Bolts
SpeedAddictsTV scores gear in five categories, with up to one lightning bolt each. The Beyond GTS earned 4.5:
- Protection (1/1): DOT and ECE 22.06. Waheed says ECE 22.06 is the certification you want in a new helmet.
- Fit (0.5/1): Temple pressure points cost it half a bolt.
- Aesthetics (1/1): Not too racy, not too bland. A clean, sophisticated sport-touring look.
- Performance (1/1): Excellent integrated comms, standout speakers, a good eye port and decent ventilation.
- Value (1/1): Expensive, but it undercuts a premium helmet plus a Packtalk Pro and is better integrated.
Who Should Buy the Cardo Beyond GTS?
Sport-touring and long-distance riders who listen to a lot of music, ride in groups or spend a lot of time on the phone, and who want an intercom that’s part of the helmet instead of clamped onto it. If you have a narrow, round head or tend to get hot spots at the temples, try one on first or plan on the optional thinner liners. Speed Addicts’ no-cost returns make that easier. Want more?
