Every now and then, a street bike comes along that completely disrupts the status quo by delivering premium performance without the premium tax. Enter the 2026 Honda CB1000 Hornet SP. Slipping through the gridlock of Southern California’s concrete jungle, this machine proves that open-class streetfighter thrills don’t have to cost a fortune.

Slicing Through the Orange County Commute

We took American Honda’s top-of-the-range liter naked bike on a true real-world test: a heavy-traffic commute down to the Speed Addicts Superstore in Orange, California. In an environment dominated by distracted drivers and endless brake lights, a naked sportbike needs to be nimble, responsive, and comfortable.

The first thing you notice from the saddle is the open riding position. Unlike a full-on sportbike, the Hornet SP utilizes a neutral handlebar bend that puts you in an upright, commanding position. It makes lane-splitting down the freeway feel remarkably natural despite the bike’s 465-pound curb weight. With a low center of gravity, it tips into tight spaces and triple-digit freeway transitions with absolute poise.

A Superbike Engine, Refined for the Street

At the heart of this beast is a 1,000cc liquid-cooled inline-four engine. This power plant is a direct descendant of the legendary 2017 CBR1000RR superbike, but it has been retuned specifically to prioritize mid-range punch. On our dyno runs, it puts down a healthy 120 horsepower at the tire and just under 72 lb-ft of torque.

Historically, Honda’s early attempts at ride-by-wire throttles felt twitchy and artificial. Fast forward nine years, and they have completely mastered it. The throttle response is exceptionally crisp and accurate, delivering linear power the second you twist the grip. Whether you are launching from a dead stop or rolling on the gas in sixth gear, the engine pulls with massive authority.

Our test model was outfitted with a 49-state legal Yoshimura R&D AT2 slip-on exhaust and a V2 fender eliminator kit. Not only did it shed a few pounds off the tail end, but it gave the inline-four an incredibly mean, mechanical growl when you give it the berries.

Premium Components at a Welterweight Price

Where the SP trim truly separates itself from the budget crowd is the running gear. Up front, you get a 41mm inverted Showa Separate Function Fork Big Piston (SFF-BP), while the rear features a premium, linkage-equipped Öhlins TTX single shock.

The suspension action is fantastic for daily riding. It does an excellent job filtering out harsh expansion joints on the slab, yet holds high in its stroke during aggressive cornering. Braking duties are handled by track-ready Brembo Stylema radial calipers biting dual 310mm discs, paired with a premium Brembo master cylinder for unmatched lever feel.

Electronic features include:

  • A crisp 5-inch color TFT instrument display
  • Honda Selectable Torque Control (traction control)
  • A buttery-smooth electronic quickshifter for clutchless upshifts and downshifts
  • Always-on front and rear ABS

While the menu navigation inside the stock TFT can feel a bit small and clunky while moving, the mechanical package more than makes up for it. For tech-savvy commuters, adding an auxiliary smart system like the Alien Rider M2-QR brings seamless Apple CarPlay and blind-spot radar detection right into your field of view.

The Verdict

Averaging roughly 38 mpg on our highway loops, the Hornet SP makes a compelling case for itself as a daily rider. It isn’t the absolute lightest or most radical hyper-naked on the market, but at an MSRP of $10,999, nothing else on two wheels gives you this much premium hardware for the money.
