Back in the 1970s, Can-Am earned its stripes with ferocious two-stroke engines—bikes so violent they were nicknamed the “Widowmaker.” Fast forward to 2026, and the brand is making a silent, high-voltage return to its roots. We recently took the 2026 Can-Am Origin electric dual-sport out on the road—and into the dirt—to see if this “Tron-like” machine can live up to the legendary nameplate.
A Modern Marvel in Motion
The Origin is a street-legal, all-electric dual-sport powered by a liquid-cooled Rotax E-Power motor. One of the most striking features is the slim profile; despite carrying a 9kWh battery, the bike weighs in at a relatively svelte 412 lbs. Riding through town, the torque is immediate. From 0 to 55 mph, this bike “gets with the program” in a hurry, offering a seamless twist-and-go experience that eliminates the need for a clutch or gear shifter.
The handling is equally impressive. Rolling on a 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheel, the Origin feels agile and light on its feet. While we noticed a slight “flap” during the worldwide press intro in Austin, this production version handles beautifully at low speeds. The inverted KYB fork and rear shock offer 10 inches of travel, providing a plush ride over urban bumps while remaining capable enough for some mid-ride power slides in the dirt.
Tech and Connectivity
Can-Am didn’t hold back on the gadgets. The 10.25-inch color TFT touchscreen is massive and crisp, though arguably a bit “overkill” for a minimalist dual-sport. It integrates with the BRP Go! app for smartphone connectivity and even supports the Vibe Bluetooth controller for music. Modern comforts like electronic reverse and heated grips are standard, making it a premium urban commuter.
Range and Charging Reality
While the Origin is freeway-legal with a top speed of 79 mph, it’s best kept to the city streets. At a steady 50 mph, you can expect around 50 miles of range. If you pin the throttle on the highway, that number drops significantly. However, the J1772 level 2 charging is a game-changer, allowing you to juice up from 0 to 80% in just under an hour.
Whether you’re a new rider looking for a friendly “twist-and-go” entry into motorcycling or a veteran seeking a low-maintenance urban squirter, the Origin brings a unique spark to the segment. It’s a fun, tech-forward machine that proves electric power has a permanent place in the dual-sport world.
