2025 Suzuki DR-Z4S Review.

Suzuki has finally updated one of the most iconic names in the dual-sport world. In a recent “In the Garage” episode, Adam Waheed takes a deep dive into the 2025 Suzuki DR-Z4S, a light-middleweight dual-sport machine that balances its legendary reliability with modern performance.

A Nearly All-New Powerplant

While it retains the 400-class spirit, the engine is over 80% new compared to its predecessor. The 398cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine features dual overhead cams and a four-valve head. Almost everything—except for select transmission components, the crankshaft, and the connecting rod—has been updated for 2025.

Key Performance Specs:

  • Horsepower: Approximately 34 hp.
  • Transmission: A 5-speed gearbox with a cable-actuated slipper clutch.
  • Top Speed: Despite having only five gears, the tall gearing allows it to reach upwards of 90 mph.
  • Fuel Economy: Impressively efficient, delivering nearly 50 mpg during mixed riding.

Chassis and Suspension

The 2025 model moves away from the old backbone style to a twin spar steel frame, which offers improved rigidity and a modern look.

The suspension is handled by high-quality KYB components. The front features an oversized inverted fork with independent compression and rebound damping, as well as air bleeds to maintain consistent performance. The rear is equipped with a KYB linkage-style shock that offers full adjustability, including high and low-speed compression damping—a premium touch for this segment.

Modern Technology and Electronics

Suzuki has brought the DR-Z into the digital age without overcomplicating it. The bike now features:

  • LED Lighting: A bright, modern LED headlight and turn signals.
  • LCD Dash: A functional display that includes a fuel gauge and settings for power modes.
  • Ride Modes: Three engine maps (A, B, and C) to adjust throttle response.
  • Traction Control: Includes a dedicated Gravel Mode that allows for controlled wheel spin, which Waheed describes as Suzuki’s best non-IMU traction control application to date.
  • Switchable ABS: Off-roaders will appreciate the ability to turn off just the rear ABS or both front and rear for total manual control.

Ergonomics and Versatility

The bike weighs in at 333 lbs with its 2.3-gallon tank full. While not the lightest in its class, Waheed notes that it feels incredibly nimble once in motion. The “dirt bike style” cockpit features a flat seat and wide handlebars, though the seat may feel a bit firm for long-distance highway stints.

Rolling on a classic 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheel setup, the DR-Z4S provides riders access to the widest variety of high-performance off-road and street tires.

The Verdict

Retailing for $9,000 in the United States, the 2025 Suzuki DR-Z4S is positioned as a premium, Japanese-built offering. It may not be as “racy” as its European competition, but its superior fit, finish, and legendary durability make it a bike built to last for decades.

For riders looking for a capable, modern, and reliable dual-sport that can handle everything from the daily commute to rugged trails, the new DR-Z4S appears ready to reclaim its throne.
