We ride the Zero XE and XB emoto duo in this review.

In the ever-evolving world of electric powersports, the “Surron-killer” conversation is constant. But what happens when a heavyweight like California-based Zero Motorcycles enters the fray? I recently headed out to the high-desert terrain of Texas to put the brand-new 2025-2026 Zero XB and XE through their paces in this bike review.

The “Surron Beater” Has Arrived? Zero XB and XE First Ride Review

If you’ve been following the e-moto scene, you know the formula: lightweight, nimble, and mountain-bike-adjacent ergonomics with a punchy electric motor. Zero is looking to refine that recipe with the XB and XE. These aren’t just toys; they are purpose-built, off-road play bikes designed for legal trails and private land.

Riding the Zero XB: The Entry Point

Starting at roughly $4,000, the XB is the lighter, more compact sibling. It’s designed for agility, weighing in as a featherweight that’s easy to flick around tight enduro-cross sections. While it’s the “smaller” bike in the lineup, don’t let the size fool you. It handles rocks and technical terrain with surprising poise. The stock suspension is capable for general play riding, though it definitely favors a smaller-stature rider. My favorite part? The ease of sliding. With the rear brake moved to the left hand (MTB-style), you have incredible control over the chassis, allowing you to square off corners with precision.

Stepping Up to the Zero XE: The Powerhouse

If the XB is the appetizer, the $5,000 XE is the main course. This is the “high-spec” beast designed to take on the top-tier Chinese competition. Swapping into “Sport Mode” on the XE is an eye-opening experience. The torque is instantaneous, mashing that off-road tire into the dirt and propelling you forward with a level of acceleration that’s genuinely addictive.

The XE features a larger frame, a more robust battery (which is easily removable, weighing about as much as a 30-pack of your favorite beverage), and significantly better components. We even tested the “Works Edition” suspension, and let me tell you—if you have the budget, the upgrade is worth every penny. It turns a fun trail bike into a legitimate off-road weapon that can handle jumps, logs, and Texas-sized “booby traps” without breaking a sweat.

The Verdict

Zero Motorcycles has brought their California engineering to the trail, and the results are a “hoot.” The XE, in particular, stands out for its power delivery and braking feel. Being able to modulate that hydraulic rear brake with your hand while power-drifting out of a turn makes you feel like a pro. Whether you’re a seasoned vet looking for a silent backyard shredder or a newcomer to the e-moto world, these bikes represent a massive step forward for the segment.
