Riding a Police Bike to Test the 2026 KTM 990 Duke R

Palm Springs isn’t just for golf carts and poolside lounging anymore. We recently took to the twisting blacktop of Highway 74 to see if KTM’s latest middleweight contenders could handle the heat of the California desert. Trading our BMW R1300RT “patrol bike” for something a bit more orange, we spent the day exploring the limit on the 2026 KTM 990 Duke R.

The Predator of the Canyons: 990 Duke R

Nicknamed “The Sniper,” the new 990 Duke R is a precision tool designed for the most aggressive street bike riders. Built around a lightweight chromoly steel trellis frame that uses the engine as a stressed member. The “Predator” styling is backed up by serious hardware, including a massive 48mm fully adjustable WP APEX fork that is significantly stiffer than the standard Duke’s unit. Whether it’s high-speed mountain passes or flicking through technical desert switchbacks, the Duke R is said to deliver a level of feedback that is hard to match in the middleweight segment.

Race DNA for the Street: RC 990 R

For those who prefer a tucked-in profile, the RC 990 R marks KTM’s triumphant return to the full-sized supersport arena. Sporting MotoGP-derived winglets that provide downforce at speed, the RC 990 R is as much a track weapon as it is a street bike. The ergonomics are claimed to be spacious for a sportbike. Stopping power is provided by top-tier Brembo calipers, ensuring optimum performance whether you’re slowing for a photo pass or a hairpin turn.
