Harley’s new 440 single: CA$8,499 (about $6,084)

Summary: The 2027 Harley-Davidson Sprint 440 is a lightweight 440cc single-cylinder cruiser rated at 27 hp and 28 lb-ft, with a 26.4-inch laden seat height, standard ABS and a 417-pound ready-to-ride weight. It’s CA$8,499 in Canada. U.S. bikes get final assembly in York, Pennsylvania and arrive in spring 2027.

For years, the cheapest way into a new gas-powered Harley-Davidson meant a five-figure price tag and a V-twin that weighed about as much as a grand piano. That changes with the 2027 Harley-Davidson Sprint 440. After weeks of teasers, Harley released full details of its new entry-level single on November 2, and it makes its public debut at EICMA 2026 at Fiera Milano Rho. We’re in Milan for the show, and this is one bike we plan to throw a leg over the minute nobody’s looking. Harley calls the Sprint 440 “an invitation to ride.” We call it the most interesting thing to come out of Milwaukee in a while, partly because of what it is and partly because of what it costs. Follow every debut on our EICMA Motorcycle Show hub.

A Familiar Name With a New Job

The Sprint name goes back to 1961, when Harley used it on a small single that, in Harley’s words, “welcomed a new generation of riders to Harley-Davidson.” Fittingly, that original Sprint was built in Italy by Harley’s then-partner Aermacchi, so the name’s return at an Italian motorcycle show is a nice bit of symmetry. Sixty-five years later, the job description is the same: get new riders on a Harley without scaring them or their bank account.

The new bike was designed and engineered by Harley-Davidson in partnership with India’s Hero MotoCorp. Its engine figures match those of the India-market Harley-Davidson X440 that Hero has built since 2023, though Harley’s Sprint release doesn’t describe it as an X440 derivative. For the U.S., Harley says final assembly happens at its Vehicle Operations plant in York, Pennsylvania. Other markets get the bike first, with launch timing that varies by country.

Styling: Cruiser Stance, Small Footprint

Harley Head of Design Bjorn Shuster says the fork rake, suspension height and wheel and tire sizes give the Sprint “a cruiser stance that is pure Harley-Davidson.” The design cues are classic H-D: a suspended headlamp, a teardrop tank, a bobbed rear fender and a fastback two-up saddle. Machined highlights on the engine and the new 10-spoke cast aluminum wheels, a tapered muffler and a Harley logo in the center of the headlamp dress it up beyond what you’d expect at this price.

Colors are Dark Billiard Gray, Vivid Black and Teal Thunder. Every color wears an orange slash graphic on the tank with a warped checkered center and Harley-Davidson script. The side covers carry the new “Harley Hare” character, which Harley says represents the bike’s quickness and agility. We’ll reserve judgment on the rabbit until we see it in person, but we respect any company willing to put a cartoon bunny on a Harley.

The Engine: 440cc of Low-RPM Torque

Power comes from an air/oil-cooled, single-overhead-cam, two-valve single displacing 440cc (26.9 ci). It’s a long-stroke design, with a 3.13 x 3.48-inch (79.6 x 88.4 mm) bore and stroke and a 9.65:1 compression ratio. Harley rates it at 27 hp (20 kW) at 6,000 rpm and 28 lb-ft (38 Nm) of torque at 4,000 rpm. Harley recommends 91-octane fuel.

Those aren’t big numbers, and they aren’t supposed to be. Harley says the long stroke delivers “torquey performance at lower RPM for authentic Harley-Davidson character,” which should make pulling away from a stop and threading through traffic easy. Electronic fuel injection handles fueling, and a gear-driven counter-balancer quells primary vibration. The exhaust is a 1-into-1 system with the catalyst in the header, and Harley promises a “deep-and-rich” tone from the single muffler. We’ll be the judge of that, ideally from the saddle.

A six-speed transmission uses overdrive ratios in fifth and sixth gear to lower rpm on the highway and save fuel. The assist-and-slip clutch lightens lever pull and helps manage rear-wheel traction during aggressive downshifts. Harley claims fuel economy of up to 77 mpg (3.037 L/100 km) combined. With a 2.4-gallon (9.0-liter) tank, that’s a theoretical range of more than 190 miles. Your mileage, as Harley’s lawyers made sure to point out, will vary.

Chassis: Sized for Real People

The laden seat height is just 26.4 inches (671 mm). Harley says that, combined with a narrow profile and tapered seat, it increases the likelihood that riders can put both feet flat on the ground at a stop. Harley’s Canadian and UK spec pages list an unladen seat height of 683 mm (26.9 inches). Harley lists a ready-to-ride weight of 417 pounds (189 kg). For riders who need a different fit, Genuine Harley-Davidson Reach and Tallboy seats are available.

Up front is a 43 mm inverted dual-cartridge fork with 5.1 inches (130 mm) of travel. Out back, piggyback coil-over shocks offer seven-step preload adjustment and 3.0 inches (76 mm) of rear wheel travel. The 10-spoke cast aluminum wheels measure 19 inches front and 17 inches rear and wear 100/90-19 and 150/60ZR17 tires, listed as MRF on Harley’s spec pages. Harley’s Canadian site lists 27.6 degrees of rake, 4.3 inches (108.3 mm) of trail, a 57.1-inch (1,450 mm) wheelbase and 31 degrees of lean angle each way.

Braking comes from a single 12.6-inch (320 mm) front disc with a two-piston caliper and a 9.4-inch (240 mm) rear disc with a single-piston caliper. ABS is standard.

Tech: Keep It Simple

Don’t expect a list of riding modes. A color TFT display sits in a 3.5-inch round housing above the handlebar for a classic look. It shows a digital speedometer, tachometer, odometer, trip meter and warning lights, and Harley’s spec pages add gear position, fuel level, clock and range. Lighting is all LED, and a USB-C charging port above the headlamp keeps your phone alive. That’s about it, and for a bike aimed at new riders, that’s probably the point.

Accessories

Genuine Harley-Davidson Motor Parts & Accessories has a launch catalog ready, with more promised. It includes black textile throw-over saddlebags (427 cubic inches, or 7 liters, combined, rated at 6 pounds or 2.7 kg per bag), a sissy bar upright and backrest pad, the Tallboy seat (about 2 inches higher and 2.5 inches farther back than stock), the Reach seat (about 1 inch forward), a Brawler solo seat, a Willie G Skull collection of footpegs, bar-end mirrors and grips, a flatter Moto handlebar, a tubular steel engine guard and a quick-detach clear windshield. Harley hasn’t published accessory prices in its release.

Price and U.S. Availability

Harley-Davidson Canada lists the Sprint 440 at CA$8,499 for Dark Billiard Gray and Vivid Black, and CA$8,799 for Teal Thunder, including freight and dealer setup. That’s about $6,084 and $6,299 at November 2, 2026 exchange rates. These are conversions, not U.S. prices. In the UK, it starts at £4,995 (about $6,688), and in Italy at €5,790 (about $6,462). Harley’s U.S. release confirms spring 2027 availability but doesn’t list a U.S. MSRP. Gear Patrol and RideApart report a U.S. starting price of $5,999. That would make it Harley’s most affordable gas-powered bike by a wide margin, but we’ll treat it as unconfirmed until Harley’s U.S. site posts it.

Either way, the Sprint 440 lands in the same neighborhood as the most popular beginner bikes from Japan. If you’re shopping that class now, read our 2026 Kawasaki Ninja 500 Review.
