Hey everyone! Welcome back to another edition of Road Test (formerly known as Out on the Road). Today, we are flinging a leg over one of the most anticipated supersport machines to come out of Mattighofen in years: the 2026 KTM 990 RC R.
If you have been keeping up with our ongoing coverage on Moto-1.com, you already know this brand-new machine bridges the gap between pure track-weapon telemetry and the harsh, bump-riddled realities of everyday asphalt.

Big-Rider Ergonomics with Real-World Comfort
Let’s talk cockpit dynamics right off the bat. At 6-foot-0 and 205 pounds, I am not exactly built like a featherweight Moto3 jockey. If you’ve ever spent time in Austria or Germany, you know the folks engineering these chassis tend to be built like brick houses—and that heritage pays serious dividends here.
Sitting down in the 990 RC R feels reminiscent of classic Japanese sportbikes like the GSX-R series. The seat height isn’t absurdly high, the clip-ons are raised just enough to save your lower back from structural collapse, and the footpegs sit at a relaxed angle.
The seat pad itself? Fair warning: it is as firm as a board room decision. While it offers plenty of real estate to slide your weight around during aggressive cornering, your backside will definitely let you know you’re riding a true sportbike after a couple of hours in the saddle.
Parallel-Twin Punch with V-Twin Soul
At the heart of this beast lies KTM’s 947cc liquid-cooled parallel-twin engine with dual overhead cams and an eight-valve head. Twist the throttle, and it gives you all the bark, character, and urgent response of a traditional V-twin.
- Power Output: A healthy 115 horsepower right out of the crate—giving it a distinct edge over mid-weight rivals like Yamaha’s YZF-R9.
- Fuel Economy: Even when you’re leaning on the cable, this parallel twin manages a respectable 44 to 46 mpg out of its 4.2-gallon fuel tank.
Down low, the chassis utilizes an oversized 48mm WP inverted front fork paired with a clever linkage-equipped rear shock. The custom link curve was engineered specifically to clear the massive catalytic converter hidden in the underbelly exhaust, giving you both emissions compliance and superb road damping. Stopping power is anchored by Brembo monobloc calipers paired with a radial-mount master cylinder featuring adjustable leverage ratios.

Next-Gen Tech & On-Dash Navigation
The electronics package is anchored by a sharp, horizontal color TFT display that features built-in moving maps with turn-by-turn navigation. Insert a cellular SIM chip, and the bike handles all waypoint and address mapping natively—no smartphone connection or third-party apps required.
The display is touchscreen-enabled (or operable via the backlit handlebar switchgear). You can toggle between Street, Sport, Rain, Track, and Custom modes on the fly. In our Custom 1 setup, we ran Supermoto ABS to disengage the rear wheel intervention and dialed back the global MTC (Motorcycle Traction Control).
While the interface is incredibly quick and lag-free, our minor gripe is that traction control and wheelie control are bundled into a single global setting rather than offering independent toggles for slide, engine braking, and lift control.
Final Verdict: The Street-Rider’s Supersport
Priced around $14,000, the 2026 KTM 990 RC R isn’t a budget budget-bike, but it delivers massive value for canyon carvers who want supersport precision without needing a chiropractor on speed dial. It skates the fine line between razor-sharp track handling and daily road usability.
