Willow Springs is known as the “Fastest Road in the West,” and it provided the perfect high-speed backdrop for the global launch of the Alpinestars Supertech R7. Following the massive success of the carbon-fiber R10, Alpinestars has unleashed its younger, leaner, and more versatile sibling. But is this just a “lite” version of a MotoGP helmet, or is it actually the smarter choice for the everyday enthusiast?

Breaking the One-Trick Pony Mold

When Alpinestars entered the street helmet market with the R10, it was a halo product—pure carbon, high-speed stability, and a price tag that topped $1,300. The Supertech R7 takes those MotoGP DNA strands and re-engineers them into a package starting at $679.95.

What’s shocking isn’t just the price; it’s the weight. Despite having a composite shell rather than 3K carbon fiber, the R7 actually weighs nearly 0.2 lbs less than the flagship R10. By slimming down the massive rear diffuser of the R10 and focusing on a more practical street/track silhouette, Alpinestars has created a helmet that feels exceptionally nimble during side-to-side transitions.

Vision and Versatility

One of the standout features discussed during our testing is the “A-Head” fitment system. This internal tech allows riders to adjust the height and angle of how the helmet sits on the head. Whether you’re tucked in on an YZF-R9 at the track or sitting upright on a KTM 990 Duke through the canyons, you can tune the eye port to ensure you’re always looking through the center of the optics.

Speaking of vision, the viewport is enormous. Combined with the included Pinlock insert, the peripheral and vertical visibility make navigating elevation changes and tight apexes effortless.

The A-Connect Integration

Alpinestars partnered with Sena to create the A-Connect system, a fully integrated comms unit based on the 60-series mesh technology. While the $550 price tag for the unit is steep, the execution is flawless. There are no wires to snag and no bulky modules hanging off the side to catch the wind or disrupt the helmet’s safety profile during a slide. The audio quality—even at triple-digit speeds—remains crystal clear for both communication and vlogging.

The Verdict

The R7 is easier to live with than the R10. It features a wider aperture for easier entry and exit, roomier ear pockets for long-range comfort, and a ventilation system that arguably flows more air through the top vents than its more expensive predecessor. While we’d love to see a longer warranty and a dark smoke shield included in the box, the performance-to-dollar ratio here is currently unmatched in the premium segment.
