This Is What It’s Like to Ride the 2026 KTM 990 Duke R at the Racetrack
When KTM adds an “R” to a model name, they aren’t just slapping on some orange paint and calling it a day. With the 2026 990 Duke R, they’ve taken the already-aggressive 947cc LC8c platform and turned the dial until it snapped off.
Performance That Punishes
The heart of this beast is a parallel-twin engine that now pumps out a claimed 130 PS (roughly 128 horsepower, but expect closer to 110-115 hp at the tire). During our testing at Chuckwalla Valley Raceway, the mid-range punch was undeniable, but it’s the way this bike “spins” that truly impresses. It holds gears longer and screams all the way to a 10,500 rpm redline without losing its breath. Whether you’re firing out of a double-apex turn or commuting through the urban jungle, the power is tractable, smooth, and, most importantly—predictable.

Chassis and Handling: Stiffer, Sharper, Better
The “R” spec means serious hardware upgrades. We’re talking about a 48mm WP APEX front fork that is 34% stiffer than the standard Duke, providing a front-end feel that is nothing short of telepathic. The rear features a new linkage-mounted WP APEX shock, a first for the LC8c naked line, which keeps the chassis incredibly planted even when you’re trailing the brakes deep into a corner.
Speaking of brakes, KTM didn’t hold back. The 990 Duke R features twin 320mm discs squeezed by Brembo Stylema monoblock calipers and an adjustable Brembo MCS master cylinder. It’s the kind of stopping power that makes your eyeballs want to leave their sockets, in the best way possible.

Tech from the Future
The first thing you’ll notice in the cockpit is the massive 8.8-inch TFT touchscreen display. It’s intuitive, fast, and features a split-screen mode that allows you to keep your navigation maps up while toggling through ride modes. With the optional “Tech Pack,” you can customize everything from launch control and traction control to anti-wheelie settings and the lightning-fast Quickshifter+.
