Yamaha Ténéré 700 World Raid Off-Road Review.

If the primary objective of an adventure motorcycle is to bridge the gap between paved civilization and untamed wilderness, the 2026 Yamaha Ténéré 700 World Raid arrives as a purpose-built precision tool. Joining Yamaha for Day 3 of its official press introduction in the rugged backcountry of Idaho, we traded sweeping asphalt sweepers for technical two-track, thick silt, and loose rock fields.

While Day 1 and Day 2 gave us a taste of pavement and sweeping gravel, today was all about finding out if this dual-tank ADV weapon actually has the chops when the terrain turns rocky, loose, and plain old mean.

Chassis, Suspension & Dirt Ergonomics

The biggest story with the World Raid upgrade is under the chassis. Standing tall with heavy-duty KYB suspension, this bike rides significantly higher in its stroke compared to the standard T7. It gives you that commanding, big-dirt-bike feel with way more bottoming resistance when you start hitting real undulations and technical two-track.

In fact, the suspension balance on this new model is rapidly closing the gap to the benchmark KTM 890 Adventure R. Yes, the World Raid is a hair wider at the midsection thanks to the dual side-mounted fuel tanks, and at roughly 485 lbs wet, it’s certainly no lightweight enduro bike. But Yamaha wisely kept the extra mass low enough so it doesn’t feel like a portly freeway cruiser once you’re standing on the pegs.

Speaking of ergonomics:

  • Standing Cockpit: Handlebars are positioned at an ideal height that naturally prompts you to keep your elbows up for max control.
  • Tank & Boot Pinch: The midsection is narrow enough at the knee-gripping contact points, letting you lock in with your boots and save your forearms from arm pump.
  • Steering Stabilizer: The adjustable Öhlins steering damper makes a noticeable difference. Crank it to max on high-speed dirt roads to keep the front wheel planted, or back it off completely when pick-and-flick agility is required.

Power, Braking & Electronics off the Beaten Path

Underneath the high-capacity rally tanks lies Yamaha’s beloved 689cc CP2 parallel-twin. Sending smooth crossplane power pulses to the rear Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR tire, the T7 behaves almost like a massive, high-horsepower flat tracker when you break the rear loose on fire roads.

The braking package remains smooth and easy to modulate off-road. The initial bite isn’t overly aggressive or snatchy, allowing you to load up the front fork before squeezing hard for maximum stopping power.

ABS Off-Road Programming

Like every modern road-legal machine, turning the key off resets the ABS back to street mode by default. While turning ABS off entirely gives you the best feel to lock up the rear and dive deep into corners, the updated off-road ABS programming is surprisingly lenient. It kicks back through the lever far less than earlier Ténéré models, letting off-roaders carry real momentum without computer-induced heart attacks.

Middleweight ADV Shootout Preview

How does the Ténéré 700 World Raid stack up against the competition? While the base T7 was a bit under-gunned in terms of suspension spec against its Austrian rival, the World Raid is ready for a proper brawl.

  • Vs. KTM 890 Adventure R: A far closer matchup now thanks to the upgraded suspension hold-up and extra range.
  • Vs. BMW F 900 GS / GS Adventure: The Ténéré’s pure dirt DNA will likely smoke the heavier BMW F 900 GS Adventure once the trails get rocky.
  • Vs. Triumph Tiger 900: While the Triumph offers supreme road comfort, the Yamaha holds a distinct edge in rugged simplicity and off-road composure.
